Visionary project to turn a badly neglected and dysfunctional mid-late century shopping centre into a thriving and healthy community place to be.
With a building plan of 30 by 50m the need to improve natural lighting was crucial. The atrium sliced diagionally through the building brings light and is also an important natural circulation route.
Valuable public meeting and gathering spaces have been created by further removing sections of the building mass. These areas provide an interface for activity between building and urban street edge, and blur the artifical boundaries between commercial and public realms.
The unique vertical diagrid structure is both landmark and counterpoint to the original building mass, structurally and visually. The diagrid structure is ideally suited to adaptation and replication where the idea is extended to other sites.
