What is important in selecting an architect

Technical expertise, shared aesthetic views, ability to manage and coordinate a project, professionalism. In the end, selection of an architect really comes down to personal choice, what feels right. With that in mind let me open a window about my basic views towards architecture and what is most important to me in my practice.

Getting the best out of any project

The best results can be found when participants start out from a position of understanding and trust and where open and healthy communication is maintained. Mutual understanding of needs and basic beliefs are important.

Looking for unrealised potential.

Early on I prefer to establish a working brief as the seed from which any project can then develop. In initial meetings I seek to understand a client’s needs which also involves looking for unrealised potential.

Architect as translator of ideas

I see the architects role as that of a translator and coordinator. Previous experience and understanding of space gives me the tools to bring the best out of any brief. As artist and master problem solver I like the space to translate the brief and will work towards meeting or exceeding needs. A significant benefit of working with an architect can be the realisation of something greater than had first been imagined. For me that is the greatest achievement.

It begins with site

Site and location often provide the source of early design inspiration with both the possibilities and limitations of place working to pre-dispose ideal arrangements, materials and expressions. Regrettable is architecture which is indifferent to its location.
